Prevention is Better Than Cure – Alcohol Prevention
Alcoholism is a frightening disease that affects many people within our country. Because alcohol is legal and widely available in many forms, it is easy for people to fall victim to alcoholism if they are that way inclined. From a young age people in our society see that alcohol is a socially accepted thing, in many circles it is even expected that people will drink socially. Many people who choose not to drink at all experience just how ingrained drinking is in our culture, when they are treated almost as outsiders by those who are drinking like “normal people”. Holidays such as Christmas and New Years Eve are generally celebrated with alcohol, champagne is served at weddings and birthdays – it seems that alcohol is completely entrenched in our society. So, it is little wonder that people can develop problems with this addictive substance.
Alcohol Prevention – The Reasons for Addiction
Alcohol addiction rarely just comes out of no where. It is a physical disease, but the cause it generally more psychological than that. Many cases of addiction stem from something that is much deeper. Often people develop addiction after a traumatic experience, or while they are grieving. People can develop addictions when they are trying to cover up, or “self medicate”, emotional pain that might stem from a problem such as low self esteem. Addiction can also be caused by extreme amounts of stress – in fact, there are many different reasons why someone might start to drink excessively. Everyone is different and everyone deals with the lows in their lives in different ways. It is unfortunate that some people, not knowing how to cope, turn to substances such as alcohol as a crutch.
Alcohol Prevention – The Importance of Education
It seems that there is little that we can do, in a democratic society, to stop people from drinking alcohol. Even though the amounts that people are drinking do tend to get excessive, it is up to them what they choose to drink and how much. Therefore, the best option open to us as a society is to ensure that people receive as much education as possible about alcohol, alcohol addiction and the effects of alcohol. At present we do educate people somewhat, but there is always room for improvement. The more people understand about just how dangerous alcohol is, and how damaging alcohol addiction can be, the more likely they are to think twice about taking that extra drink. Both young women and young men could also benefit from being educated about the way that young people tend to act when they are inebriated. There has been a drastic change in the way young women especially are presenting themselves when they have been drinking, which has been seen in the emergence of the “Girls Gone Wild” videos. If young people were to be able to see their actions when they are sober, it might alter their relationship with alcohol.
Alcohol Prevention – Helping Those Around You
On a more personal level, there are things that you can do to help those around you if you think they have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. There is a notable difference between having one or two drinks in a week and abusing alcohol. Those who drink well over the recommended weekly intake of alcohol are much more likely to have a problem with alcohol abuse or addiction in the future. If you know someone who you think abuses alcohol, then there might be some things that you can do to help them. The first thing is to talk to them. They might have a problem that they are trying to forget, or they might be going through a rough time. If you can help them to work through their problems, or if you can convince them to get professional help, then it is much more likely that they will not end up with an alcohol addiction. You can also help by educating them as much as you can about what their abuse of alcohol is doing to them.
Alcohol addiction is a problem that we need to try to fix as a society. With the prevalence of alcohol as a means of socializing, it can be hard to help people to see just how damaging it can be. Yet it is very damaging – alcohol can cause serious psychological problems, real physical problems and even death. If you are worried about a particular person, do not just turn a blind eye. Whatever you can do to help them could make all the difference in the future. Alcohol addiction is not something that we can just ignore, we need to be more proactive in preventing addiction, rather than just curing it when it occurs.
